The content for this set of three books is from The Moth podcast #891 recorded on November 1st 2024, titled “Goodness Gracious”.
The Moth is an hour long weekly radio show. Each episode is curated with stories surrounding a specific topic. The stories from this week circle the central theme of positivity stemming from sad or heavy situations. Each story is deeply personal and told from firsthand experience.
My goal was to create a sense of individuality within each book while keeping it a cohesive set. Each cover contains the name of the storyteller, distinguishing each from the other while providing visual connections between the three. Each book has a unique material, setting it apart from the other books both visually and materially. Each book has a different size determined by the length of the story. Photos, reciepts, and wrappers referenced by the stories are included in a brown paper box.
The neon lime color seen throughout this project refer to the acts of kindness mentioned in the episode. The book box offers a clean way of keeping all the materials together while allowing the spiral bindings to remain exposed for accesibility.
Matt
Employing shortsheets and McDonalds bags, this book pays homage to the restaurant where Matt found his lifelong best friend.
Lori
Lori tells the story of a daughter who gives away her mother’s hand crafted hats. The material exploration and color palette are inspired by the wild and fantastic designs Lori describes.
Heidi
Placing an emphasis on sincerity, Heidi tells the story of a coworker showing kindness in an hour of darkness. The limited color palette refers to the high alert and tense context of Heidi’s work. The vellum plays on the theme of deeper meaning behind words.
