Teatro Della Pergola is one of Italy’s oldest still-working theaters. It exists as part of a larger theater organization in Florence, so it has no branding identity of its own.
This project implemented a logo and design system to be used throughout advertising and promotional materials.
Employing royal purple, the color palette refers to the theater’s origin, when only grand dukes and their families were permitted to be members of the theater. The initial logo for the Pergola theater, created 350 years ago and untouched since, was a windmill crest with the statement “in its movement stopped motionless”. The theater places emphasis on looking to the future while preserving its connection to it’s origin. The pergola is infamous for being the first theater to incorporate a three-tiered box system into theater architecture.
Given the historical significance and longevity of this beautiful theater, it was important to maintain a clear connection to it’s original identity and values. Drawing inspiration from both the windmill motif and notable architecture, this logo is an modernized outline of the original pergola crest.
the system applied across multiple forms of merchandise.
