A NEW LEAF
DURATION:January 2025-April 2025
ADVISOR:Megan Irwin
- Grief is so commonly experienced yet rarely talked about. After experiencing an especially impactful loss, I realized how heavy and uncomfortable the conversation of loss is to broach.
- This project aims to create a space for grief. Spanning 4 months, A New Leaf consisted of an installation and editorial portion.
- THE INSTALLATION: The installation consisted of a lasercut box to collect responses, vellum sheets, and a list of promtps for participants. It travelled around the WashU campus as well as the greater St. Louis area to collect responses from anonymous individuals.
- THE EDITORIAL:
- The editorial portion breaks down the five stages of grief into five seperate booklets, allowing readers to move through these stages in the pace and order they feel most comfortable with. Imagery is primarily lumen prints I created for this project exclusively. The process of lumen printing occurs over days, and the resulting image is a print of what used to be on the paper, but is no longer there. This process reflects the human experience of loss, along with the other natural life imagery throughout the book. Blind embossing on the book box draws on the same idea. Responses from the installation portion of the project are included throughout the book.
